Pressestimmen

"On Stalin's Team is an utterly absorbing and sometimes blood-curdling account of the domestic and office life of the most bourgeois of proletarian dictators. Sheila Fitzpatrick's group biography of Stalin's inner circle of meritocratic bureaucrats and squalid mobsters is unputdownable."--Bernard Wasserstein, author of Barbarism and Civilization: A History of Europe in Our Time"On Stalin's Team is an extremely readable, lively, and exciting account of the lives and work of the men who were closest to the unpredictable dictator. The reader is a kind of voyeur, peeking into the personal and political relationships of powerful people who worked together on a knife's edge. It is hard not to become fascinated by these characters, whose portraits Sheila Fitzpatrick so deftly draws in this seductive book. Her scholarship is impeccable and the stories she tells are dramatic, engrossing, and tragic."--Ronald Grigor Suny, author of The Soviet Experiment"This important book focuses on the team led by Stalin and on its members' relationships with him and each other: the Politburo after hours, as it were. Here we have fascinating details about real people with recognizable personalities, likes and dislikes, and wives and children. Written in an attractive style, this book should have a broad audience."--J. Arch Getty, author of Practicing Stalinism"Co-Winner of the 2016 Prime Minister's Literary Award for Non-Fiction, Australian Government Department of Communications and the Arts""2015 Silver Winner in History, ForeWord Reviews' INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards""Honorable Mention for the 2016 PROSE Award in Government & Politics, Association of American Publishers""One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2016""Though there have been a number of fine studies of Stalin and his henchmen in the past few years, On Stalin's Team offers new insight into the complex group dynamics that sustained his political power for so long."---Rachel Polonsky, Times Literary Supplement"One of the most novel sections of the book is the chapter on how the ruling group fared without Stalin. Fitzpatrick shows the team managing the post-Stalin transition remarkably well, not only maintaining stability but even launching a raft of reforms. Building on a recent vein of scholarship, she suggests that they were able to do this precisely because they had already consolidated as a group under the dictator."---Yoram Gorlizki, London Review of Books"A superb group portrait of the dictator's closest lieutenants at a pivotal moment in history."---Joshua Rubenstein, Wall Street Journal

You can tell from the start this was written by a world class historian and writer, excellent in every way, comprehensive without being wordy or meandering, scholarly while being readable for a wide audience, provides a excellent foundation for further study (the bibliography is a treasure trove) but is still valuable for someone wanting a single volume introduction.

Gives some very good insights into how Stalin and his team operated. Reflects lots and lots of research through the archives. And this is also the drawback...this book is written from a sociological viewpoint and is a bit tedious in points...every chapter has a summary of who had access to Stalin during the period of interest as reflected in Stalin's daily schedule. I found myself starting to skip those parts. But I satisfied a lot of my curiosity about how things worked from the inside and how Stalin was able to get away with what he did.

Sheila Fitzpatrick has written a book whose time has come. While many others are writing bios of Stalin, she has taken another tack. She has written a well written study of Stalin's relationship to his team. Stalin was a dictator, but he gave the day to day decision making to his team. They were trusted, up to a point, until the end of his life and it was the team who eased the transition to the post-Stalin era. With a complete knowledge of the archives, memoirs and academic monographs, she has built the commanding study of the era. It reads like a novel, with broadly drawn portraits of all of the leading personalities. and organizations. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to as wide a reading public as possible. It provides a comprehensive history of this much disputed era of Soviet history.

Reading this absorbing tale of Stalin's closest allies, I couldn't help but think of Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil" phrase. That is, Fitzpatrick describes those closest to Stalin, mostly men, going about their work without very little recognition that they are participating in one of history's most gruesome periods. They are hardworking men who have some worker intrigues, but are united, for the most part, in the mission of their boss,Stalin. In fact, Stalin himself comes across as a hardworking, dedicated manager who is just implementing his "company's mission." To them, executions and imprisonment are just part of the job of implementing the Marxist Utopia. Almost as banal in its necessity as General Motors laying off workers or closing a plant, abandoning a company town without care for those left behind.

Josef Stalin (1879-1953) was one of the cruelest dictators who ever lived. In this succinct but valuable addition to the literature on Stalin Dr. SheilaFitzpatrick adds to our understanding of Stalin's henchmen. We learn that:a. Many of the men around Stalin came from his Caucasus region of the Soviet Union. Stalin was the son of a cobbler and a seminary dropout before he joined the Bolsheviks. He spent years in Siberian exile before emerging under Lenin . With the death of Lenin in 1924 he made his brutal rise to the top of the Communist Party elite.b. Many of the men who advised Stalin ended up in exile such as Trotsky or shot following quick show trial in Moscow.c. In the early years of Stalin's rule there were rivals to his power. Kirov in Leningrad were murdered; others of his opponents died in the Great Purge.d. World War II left over 20 million Soviets dead. Stalin was guided by his chief advisor Molotov.e. Stalin aged badly as his hatred of the medical profession and Jews increased. He was senile and paranoid. There have been many more books published on the men around Hitler. Dr. Fitzpatrick is to be commended for introducing Western readers to the evil men who surrounded Stalin.
